Simpler Times

Life was so simple when every road trip just meant I loaded up on snacks from the nearest convenience store. The only consideration was making sure I had the proper sweet to salty ratio to go along with all the soda and red bulls I’d be chugging along the way.

When We Dumped the Junk

Then we got the bright idea to dump the junk. Removing processed foods from our diet was a great idea…until the next road trip!

Just kidding, it was still a great idea, but now I had to truly plan out road trip snacks…and of course, figuring out where to eat meals since we no longer went through the nearest fast food drive-through!

It’s been nearly a decade since we cleaned up our diet, and although it takes extra planning in every aspect of our eating life, it soon became second nature to us. We quickly learned with a little pre-planning, clean and whole food snacks were very easy to travel with.

The biggest change we made to travel-eating was ensuring we planned extra time to stop and eat at a sit-down restaurant that provided plenty of healthy meal options. It was a bit of a pain at first, but we quickly adapted and realized along with healthier lunches and dinners, the stops also provided a much-needed break on a road trip.

Then Came Keto

Then we adopted a ketogenic lifestyle, and with it, a new set of culinary obstacles when traveling. But similar to when we removed processed foods from our diet, we simply needed to adapt to how we planned our travels.

We were already accustomed to making time to stop and sit down to eat our meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), but we needed to take one additional step. Review the menu at potential restaurant stops to ensure they have keto friendly options and easy food swaps (fresh veggies for potatoes and fries).

Thankfully, in today’s world, we have devices to tell us such things! Seriously, how did we ever survive before the days of smartphones? Using apps such as Yelp or Travel Advisor, we can quickly scope restaurants along our route, and can usually see the menus from the app. If not, a quick google search for the restaurant’s direct website will give us what we need.

But what about snacks?? Every good road trip needs some snacks for the car, right? I have compiled a list of 17 keto-approved road snacks that are easy to travel with! I’m not saying these are all the “healthiest” option, but hey, it’s a road trip, and ya gotta splurge some, right ?
