Some Recipes Feed the Body — Others Feed the Soul

There are moments in life when cooking becomes more than a chore, more than a meal. It becomes therapy.

For me, this recipe for Shepherd’s Pie holds that kind of weight.

Shepherd’s Pie was the favorite meal of my dear friend’s son, Nick — a young man whose life was full of kindness, laughter, and light. When I make this dish, especially around his birthday, it’s my way of remembering him and honoring his incredible mother, Jessica.

Grief has touched my life deeply. There was a season when loss left me feeling small, broken, and disconnected — when even taking care of myself felt selfish or undeserved. But over time, I learned that self-care isn’t selfish; it’s sacred. It’s a way of honoring the lives that have touched ours and of showing gratitude for the time we’re given.

So today, in memory of Nick, let’s make something warm, healing, and full of love — a low-carb, high-protein version of Jessica’s Shepherd’s Pie.

In Loving Memory

Every bite of this Shepherd’s Pie is a reminder that comfort food can heal in its own quiet way.

When I think about Nick — and his mother Jessica, who continues to honor his life with so much grace — I’m reminded that healing isn’t about forgetting. It’s about honoring, remembering, and continuing forward with love.

“Some days, I wish I could go back and hug the version of me that was just trying to survive. I would tell her that healing takes time — and that choosing to care for yourself does not diminish the love you have for those you’ve lost.”

This dish is my way of holding space for that — for love, for loss, and for hope that still remains.
